Being uneasy, or just plain terrified of visiting a dentist is one of the most common things I see clients for. It is often the anticipation of going to, and then willingly allowing him to poke around in your mouth, that is the worse part about it. Interestingly, it is always him, never her. I have yet to find anyone who imagines a female dentist in any that is unhelpful or unpleasant.
Sometimes a client has had a single experience in the past, which creates an association that is so strong it creates a thinking pattern that is particularly unhelpful. On the other hand, they may have, over time, learnt to associate the annual childhood visit to the dentist with unhelpful comments and behaviours or others, creating an aversion. In the brain, they have learnt the message ‘watch out for the dentist, he will hurt you’
The key to changing is not to analyse the past, the whys and the wherefores, it is to change the way of thinking. Instead of thinking about it in the way they used to think about it that made them afraid, it is now thinking about it in a more appropriate way, that allows my client to have the freedom and flexibility to take care of their health in that way.
Give me a call and if I can help you I will.
