Stress and the modern world just seem to go hand in hand now a day. A little stress can be a good propeller to greatness; but this is the exception not the rule, stress in our modern world can almost be too much to cope with. This is hardly surprising when we live with constant media reporting of all the ‘bad news’ stories. From the credit crunch to the Euro there is always something else to stress over.
What we think, and how we think determines how we feel. How we feel significantly influences what we believe and how we behave in life. Problems such as stress all occur when a person finds themselves in ‘a problematic emotional loop’ or ‘stuck state’ and it feels like there are few, if any choices available.
The things we say to ourselves make a huge difference, too often we accept our own judgement of ourselves and situation in a way we would never accept from another person, we literally talk ourselves in to a hole, get stuck and stress about it.
The great big ‘What If’ question can paralyse a person with stress and fear, "What if X happens?" is the constant questioning in mind, What if I am late? What if they don’t like me? What if I do it wrong?… Too many 'What If' questions and your mind will only be paying attention to ‘problems’. Too many problems and not enough answers are stressful.
Sometimes the stress is not a therapy issue, it is a training issue. It is a matter of not knowing how to deal with a situation, a problem and then feeling ‘stuck’ in that way. Some therapists do their clients a major dis-service by not realising this small but important distinction. Four sessions addressing a patients perceived feelings when faced with a potential medical emergency, are a lot less useful than a half days first aid training course, providing specific clear precise guidelines on what to actually do.
There is a reasuring certainty in actually knowing what to do if 'X' happens.
Call me for an honest answer, if I can help I will.
